Clinical and Whilst In The Chair
Consent is done before you pick up a handpiece.
Consent usually means a paper form in a drawer, or a quick “happy to go ahead?” with nothing to show if anyone asks later.
In Joyful, consent happens in two steps. The patient agrees the plan first. On the day, they sign on their phone, or you record verbal consent. Both stay on the record.
Consent needed
Consent is needed before you start the filling on UR6. Written is best. If they cannot sign, record verbal consent.
How it works
01
Patients know what they’re agreeing to
They read the benefits, risks and alternatives before they say yes.
Before agreeing, patients read what the treatment involves, the benefits, the risks in order of how likely they are, the alternatives, and what happens if they do nothing. They can only accept while the offer is open and while that content exists for the treatment.
- Informed consent means patients see the risks, the alternatives and the option to do nothing.
- If there is no content for a treatment, there’s no form to sign.

Proof of consent in about two minutes
Patients sign on their phone, or you record verbal consent.
If you try to start treatment without consent on the day, Joyful stops you and asks for it. For written consent, the patient scans a QR code or types a six digit code, enters their date of birth and signs with a finger. Verbal consent is recorded instantly and counts just the same. If consent isn’t given, today’s treatment stops but the plan stays.
- Only the patient can sign. Three wrong dates of birth and the link closes.
- Verbal consent is valid. Joyful just prefers written.
- Check-in can wait until both consent and medical history are done.

Every X-ray is justified on the record
The reason is recorded before any image can be attached.
Before the consent step for an X-ray, the clinician records why it is needed. Images can’t be attached to that booking until the reason exists, so the step can’t be skipped on a busy day.
- The reason is recorded before consent, every time.
- Images can’t be uploaded against an X-ray until the reason is there.

The small print
- Agreeing the plan is never consent on the day. Patients are always asked again.
- The consent link isn’t texted. The patient needs to be in the practice.
- Joyful writes and maintains the consent library, so practices don’t have to.
